Got a week to visit La Réunion and want to feast your eyes on everything? This guide is for you! Whether you’re into hiking, beaches, culture, or gastronomy, the intense island has plenty to offer. The idea is to amaze you while taking the time to savor every moment. Here’s a day-by-day itinerary, lovingly put together, to help you organize a memorable and action-packed 7-day stay!

Day 1: Arrival and first impressions in Saint-Denis
As soon as you step off the plane, the warm, fragrant air immediately immerses you in the tropical atmosphere. Take your time to pick up your rental car or reach your first accommodation. Then, head to Saint-Denis! Stroll leisurely along Rue de Paris to discover the magnificent Creole villas, remnants of a rich colonial past, and soak in the city’s soul. Between walks, settle onto a terrace to savor your first cari at a small local eatery in the center.
For sunset, climb up to Colorado or stop at La Montagne: the view of the ocean and the illuminated city is magical.
Photo tip: the Jardin de l’État offers superb shots with its palm-lined avenues, old kiosks, and golden light at the end of the day.

Day 2: Head to the Salazie cirque
Today, take the winding, lush road that leads to Salazie. It’s undoubtedly one of the most accessible and verdant cirques on the island. Along the way, pause at Voile de la Mariée, an iconic waterfall that cascades down the cliff like lace.
Continue to Hell-Bourg, a charming village ranked among France’s most beautiful. Wander its streets, visit Maison Folio for an immersion in local history, and stop at a small restaurant for a delicious boucané bringelles.
Local tip: take the time to chat with the locals, who are always warm and full of anecdotes about their island.
Day 3: The volcano and the Plaine des Sables
Wake up at dawn for an unforgettable day in the highlands. Head towards the volcano road! The drive up to the Plaine des Sables is a journey in itself: the landscapes change as you ascend, transitioning from tropical forest to a lunar environment.
Once you reach Pas de Bellecombe, you can admire Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Depending on your fitness level and motivation, you can hike to the crater (be sure to check conditions before you go).
Unmissable photo spot: the descent into the Plaine des Sables offers a unique perspective with its red and ochre colors, especially at sunrise.

Day 4: Wild South, waterfalls, and lava flows
Today, head to the Wild South, one of the island’s most authentic corners. Start your day at Grand Anse: this white sand beach lined with coconut trees is perfect for breakfast with a view.
Continue your drive along the coast, passing through Manapany (natural pool!) and Cap Méchant, where waves crash against the volcanic rock. In Sainte-Rose, discover the spectacular lava flows of 1977 and 2007, one of which even bypassed a church that still stands!
End the day at Anse des Cascades for a relaxing break among filao trees, waterfalls, and coconut palms. If you’re in a van, it’s a perfect spot to spend the night.
Vanlife tip: many areas are quiet and well-located between Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose. Remember to be discreet and respectful of nature.
Day 5: Cilaos and its 400 bends
Hold on tight, today we’re climbing to Cilaos! The road leading there is legendary: over 400 bends through impressive landscapes. Take your time and make stops to admire the viewpoints.
Once in the village, stroll through the flowery streets, visit the Maison de la Broderie or the Cilaos wine museum, and enjoy a good local lunch. For the more athletic, the Chapelle trail is a superb hike that leads to a secret gorge.
Personal recommendation: Cilaos lentils are an institution. Try them with a good smoked sausage or a chicken curry, you’ll thank me later.
Day 6: Beach, snorkeling, and relaxation in the West
After several days of driving and hiking, it’s time to relax! Head to the West coast and its dream beaches. The Hermitage lagoon is ideal for a peaceful swim. Grab a mask and snorkel to observe tropical fish and colorful corals.
You can also explore the marine reserve or go on a boat trip to observe dolphins (or whales, depending on the season). It’s also the perfect day for a paddleboarding session or lunch with your feet in the sand.
Instagram spot: don’t miss the sunset from Boucan Canot beach or Saline-les-Bains, it’s often spectacular.

Day 7: Market, souvenirs, and last treats
Your stay is coming to an end… but there’s still plenty to enjoy. If you’re here on a Friday or Saturday, don’t miss the Saint-Paul market: festive atmosphere, colorful stalls, local specialties, and artisanal souvenirs galore.
It’s also a good time to buy vanilla, spiced rum, local jams, or some spices to extend the trip once you’re back home. And if you want one last swim, the beaches of Étang-Salé or Saint-Leu are ideal.
Final treat: end your stay with a spicy rougail saucisse and a fresh mango juice by the sea.
Conclusion
In 7 days, you won’t have seen everything (impossible!), but you’ll have had a magnificent overview of La Réunion island. Between cirques, volcanoes, beaches, and Creole culture, you’ll leave with your head full of memories.
And if you already feel like coming back… that’s normal, it’s the Réunion effect 😄
