Introduction to Le Pouce: The Giant of Mauritius
Le Pouce is one of the most iconic mountains in Mauritius. At 812 meters high, it dominates the Port Louis region and offers a breathtaking viewpoint over the entire island. This mountain is particularly popular with hikers for its well-marked trails and stunning views of the surroundings.

Hiking Le Pouce
I had the chance to do this hike during my trip to Mauritius and it’s a memory I particularly cherish. The hike begins with a wide track that passes near a few houses; the slope is gentle and without difficulty. On the left, a wooden sign indicates several directions and walking times, allowing 2h10 for Le Pouce. We chose to take a slight right and follow a very rocky track that starts near tall eucalyptus trees before entering under the cover of jamrosas that create pleasant shade.

Further along, the track narrows and turns into a trail made up mainly of large rocks that are hard on the ankles. The vegetation quickly becomes sparse and the trail makes a switchback to the right. You then walk alongside a high, impassable rock face that has wooden bars fixed horizontally, though their purpose is unclear. The monkeys spotted further down in the valley have no need for these bars to pass the rocks, and they’re too fragile to slow down potential rockfalls.
The trail, still just as rocky, begins to climb more and more steeply. After a few switchbacks, you reach a tiny blue shrine at the start of a small plateau. We took advantage of the panoramic views over the island before they widened to the full 360° at the summit.
Reaching the Summit: A 360° View of Mauritius
At the summit of Le Pouce, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the city of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, as well as the mountain’s surroundings. The colors of the vegetation and the sea blend together to form a breathtaking scene. Take the time to sit on the rocks and enjoy this special moment.During my hike up Le Pouce, I had the chance to make the ascent accompanied by a local guide who showed me hidden corners of the mountain and gave me information about the island’s fauna and flora. It was a real pleasure to be able to share this experience with someone who knows the region so well.

It’s important to note that this hike is not suitable for people who suffer from vertigo. The last few meters to reach the summit are very steep and can be difficult to climb for some people. It’s therefore advisable to carefully assess your physical abilities before embarking on the ascent. In summary, hiking Le Pouce is a must during a trip to Mauritius. It offers a breathtaking panorama of the city and surroundings, and is an ideal way to discover the island’s nature and culture. Don’t hesitate to hire a guide to accompany you on this adventure—you’ll keep an unforgettable memory of it.
