Hike itinerary:<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

Driving access to the trailhead: Once you reach <\/span>Cilaos<\/span><\/u><\/a> (from Saint-Louis via RN5), drive through the village, take the D241 after the church toward Bras-Sec, and park at the Le Bloc parking area (about 3 km from Cilaos), or take the local bus (line 63) from the center of Cilaos to the “Le Bloc” bus stop. You can also start the hike from the church in Cilaos (add 1h15 each way + 45 minutes round trip).<\/span><\/span><\/p>

This hike takes you to the summit of Piton des Neiges\u2014it’s the shortest route but also the steepest.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Piton des Neiges is the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, which is why this hike is probably one of the most popular on the island of La R\u00e9union. After all, it’s not every day that an average hiker can climb above 3,000 meters (9,842 feet). This legendary mountain lost 1,000 meters during the collapse of its crater and the formation of the surrounding ring. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"Hike<\/figure>

Even though this hike is difficult, it’s still accessible for experienced hikers! If you start early enough, you can easily do the round trip in a day. For a very fit hiker, the ascent typically takes around 4 hours and the descent 3 hours. If you want to take your time, you can also spend the night at the Caverne Dufour g\u00eete. It’s located halfway along the hike and allows you to complete the ascent of Piton des Neiges over 2 days\u2014I recommend this option if you want to catch the sunrise from the summit. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The hike starts at Le Bloc in Cilaos at 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) altitude. You can get there by bus, but there’s also a parking area where you can leave your car.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The first part of the hike to the Caverne Dufour g\u00eete is under tree cover and shaded from the sun. During the rainy season, it’s not uncommon for the trail to be quite muddy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Once you reach the g\u00eete, take the opportunity to eat and rehydrate\u2014the second part of the ascent is probably the toughest. This section is on volcanic rock with lots of stones and gravel, so watch out for slips! Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse until you spot the summit, which has a reddish-orange hue. Just a few more minutes of walking and you’re there! <\/span><\/span><\/p>

At the summit, you can enjoy the 360-degree view that this Piton des Neiges viewpoint offers, including stunning views over the Cilaos cirque. To the west, Mafate is slightly hidden by the mountains of the Piton des Neiges massif. It’s also possible to camp at the summit\u2014there are rocky areas set up for pitching a tent. Those who don’t like rushing at sunrise can leave the day before, sleep at the Caverne Dufour g\u00eete, and watch the sunrise from the mountaintop early in the morning. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The return follows the same route.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
