On my last trip to <\/span>Cilaos<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/a>, I wanted to discover its <\/span>old thermal baths<\/span><\/strong>. The walk is easy and pleasant, but finding it wasn\u2019t without a few challenges. To reach nature\u2019s wonders, you have to earn them, right?<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Among the attractions in <\/span>Cilaos<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/a>, the hot springs are in the top 5 things to do in this mountain cirque. In fact, these hot springs are known for their healing properties, and many people come to soak their feet there during the coldest months. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>

History of the old thermal baths: <\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

The <\/span>natural hot springs of Cilaos<\/span><\/strong> were discovered around 1830, when the cirque was mainly occupied by enslaved people who sought refuge there. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>

Very quickly, word spread about the baths\u2019 therapeutic effects, and the first spa-goers made their way to the cirque by whatever means existed at the time (on foot, on horseback, in sedan chairs). <\/span><\/span><\/p>

A new building was constructed at the end of the 19th century to expand capacity: the reputation of the <\/span>Cilaos thermal baths<\/span><\/strong> spread beyond the ocean\u2014Mauritians, Comorians, and Malagasy visitors wanted to enjoy its benefits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In 1948, a cyclone almost completely destroyed the baths\u2014they were rebuilt two years later on the original foundations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In 1988, construction began on the new building to meet growing demand. In fact, the history of <\/span>Cilaos<\/span><\/strong> is built in part around the healing, beneficial virtues of its natural hot springs. Today, Cilaos remains the only spa resort in the Indian Ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

How do you get there?<\/span><\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

There aren\u2019t many signs to guide you, but don\u2019t be discouraged\u2014it\u2019s ultimately easy to reach, and it\u2019s worth every detour I took before finally finding it! <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Pick up the Porters\u2019 Trail behind the media library car park,<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Then head down until you reach the road again. After about 40 metres on the road, take the trail directly on the left and you\u2019ll see the house with the red roof (<\/span>old thermal baths<\/span><\/strong>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Walk along the building and follow the path\u2014after a few dozen minutes, you\u2019ll hear the waterfalls. You can cut through the undergrowth and you\u2019ll come face to face with\u2026 these magnificent waterfalls! <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Head down following the trail, or via the river if the weather is calm enough, to discover the different spots.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

The hike isn\u2019t particularly dangerous; it\u2019s known to be easy and fairly quick. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The history of the <\/span>Cilaos Thermal Baths<\/span><\/strong> begins with the discovery of the springs by Paulin T\u00e9cher in 1815. The springs were analysed in 1819 and recognised as being of good quality for treatments. In 1835, the first spa-goers began to come, and a basic facility was built in 1839. The first real trail was completed in 1845, and spa-goers arrived in Cilaos in sedan chairs. Dr Mac Auliffe took over management of the baths in 1900. However, a cyclone in 1948 destroyed the buildings in a few minutes, and baths and treatments are now provided in the new Ir\u00e9n\u00e9e Accot facility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
